There was a problem starting portabledeviceapi.dll

I’ve been getting this error frequently on my Windows 8.1 Pro box, and I can’t seem to find any information about it. I have tried reinstalling Windows on top of the existing setup, but to no avail.

Has anyone seen this error before?

  1. I installed Windows 8.1 a few minutes ago and I got the same error message 😮

  2. Chiron: Hmm, eventually someone will find a cure…I hope (even if it only a minor nuisance). I wasn’t totally sure if I started getting this error before or after upgrading to Windows 8.1. Your findings seem to indicate the latter though.

  3. It doesn’t interrupt the use of Windows though, however I’m pretty curious what would be the cause of this..

  4. I got the cure:
Open Task Scheduler, find WPD folder, remove SqmUpload… task. Voila.
    Don’t thank me 😉

  5. Thanks Adam. Seems SqmUpload is part of the Customer Experience Improvement program of Windows.

  6. I haven’t been able to locate Task Scheduler, WPD folder, or SqmUpload. I hate “Search” in Windows. What am I doing wrong – how do I get to SqmUpload?

  7. Open “run” type in “taskschd.msc” than go to WPD and there it is ;] hope i helped
