Yesterday I came across a rather annoying issue that would not let me open any Word documents in Word 2010, if they originated from an external source (download or received in Outlook 2010). The error I got in the Microsoft Word dialog box was:
Word experienced an error trying to open the file.
Try these suggestions.
* Check the file permissions for the document or drive
* Make sure there is sufficient free memory and disk space.
* Open the file with the Text Recovery converter.
I’m not sure why it suddenly became a problem to open these documents, as I’ve had Office 2010 installed for quite some time. So, either it was caused by repairing my Office 2010 installation or the updates installed from Windows Update…
Anyway, I did a bit of searching, but to no avail. Then I checked the properties of one of the documents, (right-click the document in Windows Explorer, and then click Properties), and at the bottom of the General tab of the Properties dialog box, next to the Security label, the following description is displayed:
This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer.
All I had to do then was to click the Unblock button next to the description; bloody simple.
